Timezones
How Langee handles timezones for lessons and scheduling.
How lesson times are shown
All lesson times in Langee are stored internally as UTC. However, they are always displayed in your local timezone — both the local time and UTC are shown together to avoid confusion:
Monday, 15 June 2026 at 10:00 BST (09:00 UTC)This dual format appears in:
- Booking confirmation emails
- Cancellation notifications
- Reschedule notifications
- In-app system messages in your lesson chat
How your timezone is detected
Langee automatically detects your timezone from your browser each time you log in. No manual setup is required.
The detected timezone (for example, Europe/London for UK users in BST) is silently saved to your account and used when sending you personalised email notifications.
If you travel or access Langee from a device in a different region, the timezone shown will update automatically to match that device's timezone.
BST vs GMT (and other seasonal changes)
The UK switches between GMT (winter) and BST (+1 hour, summer) automatically. Because Langee uses your browser's timezone (Europe/London), this is handled for you — you will always see the correct local time regardless of whether it is currently GMT or BST.
For example, if a tutor creates a slot at "09:00" in summer (BST), the lesson is stored as 08:00 UTC. Students booking that slot see 09:00 BST (08:00 UTC) — not the misleading 08:00 UTC.
For tutors: setting your timezone when creating slots
When you add an availability slot, your browser's current timezone is sent along with the time. This ensures the slot is saved correctly as UTC.
Important: Always create slots from a device whose system clock is set to your correct local timezone. If you create slots while travelling abroad, the times will be interpreted as local to wherever you are at the time.
For students: booking across timezones
Lesson times shown on the booking page reflect the lesson time in the tutor's timezone alongside UTC. You can then compare against your own local time.
A future update will show your local equivalent time directly on the booking page.
Troubleshooting
The lesson time looks wrong in notifications
Make sure your device's system timezone is set correctly. Langee reads it automatically at login. Log out and log back in to re-sync.
I see a UTC time I didn't expect
UTC is always shown as a reference. The primary time shown is your local timezone. If the local time looks wrong, check your device's timezone settings.
